Portal Wall Decals From Your Own Picture: Make a 3D Opening in Any Wall

A portal decal is the wall-sticker illusion of an opening: a hole smashed through the bricks, an open window with the shutters back, a wormhole, a fairy tunnel, and a whole world beyond it. Etsy and Amazon sell these by the thousand, but you get the artist's picture and never your own. On Reality Fabricator you make it yourself, in the browser: bring a picture (a photo from your phone, a picture you generated here, a character you drew, a page of your comic), pick an opening and a shape, and see it on a wall at once; then it is printed as a peel-and-stick wall sticker, a window cling, a poster, a canvas print or a shirt.

Over forty openings in six themes. Wall breaks: brick, plaster, concrete, boards, ancient stone, drywall, torn steel. Windows and doors: an open window, a doorway, a brass porthole, a ship's hatch, an airplane window, a castle window, barn doors, elevator doors, a vault door. Nature: a cave mouth, a tree hollow, a fairy tunnel, a garden archway, an ice cave, a rock arch, a vine wreath. Sci-fi: a wormhole, a time warp, a ring gate, a holographic frame, a tear in space, a spaceship viewport, a neon gate. Magic: a magic portal, a rune portal, a fairy ring, an enchanted mirror, a spell circle, a ring of fire, a wardrobe. Fun: torn paper, a keyhole, a gilded frame, a mouse hole, a retro TV, torn cardboard, a comic burst, ripped denim. Each comes in the shapes that suit it: a smashed wall in square, landscape and portrait, a porthole round. A landscape or a galaxy is seen through the opening, cropped into the hole with the frame's shadow on it; a character or a pet is cut out and steps out of it, with the inside of the opening dark, glowing or see-through.

Nothing is generated when you change the opening or its shape, so trying another costs nothing: every change is instant. Only the printing is paid for, at the printer's price plus a small margin, and it ships from a print shop in your part of the world.

What you can do

How it works

  1. Bring a picture: upload a photo, pick one from your gallery, or make one with the image generator.
  2. Pick the opening and its shape. The picture is set into it at once, on a wall, free, and you can try them all.
  3. Pick the product and the size: a wall sticker for the wall, a window cling for the glass, a poster, a canvas, a shirt.
  4. Order. The print shop prints it and ships it to you; your orders page tracks it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a portal wall decal?

A sticker printed to look like an opening in the wall, a hole smashed through bricks, a porthole, a window, a doorway, with a scene beyond it. The frame of the opening carries the depth, so from a few steps away the wall looks open. The classic Etsy versions show a forest, a galaxy or a castle; here the scene is your own picture.

Can I use my own photo?

Yes. Any picture works: a photo, a picture you generated on Reality Fabricator, a drawing, a comic page. A landscape or a scene is cropped into the opening. A person, a pet or an object is cut out of its background and steps out of the opening, and the picture's background is dropped.

Which shapes and themes are there?

Six themes (wall breaks, windows and doors, nature, sci-fi, magic, fun) with over forty openings between them, and each opening comes in the shapes that suit it: a smashed wall in square, landscape and portrait, a porthole round. Left on "as the picture", the shape follows your picture: a wide photo gets a wide opening.

Which products can carry an opening?

Every print the shop makes except a badge: the peel-and-stick vinyl wall sticker, the clear and frosted window clings, posters, canvas prints, shirts, vinyl stickers, mugs and the rest of the range. The wall sticker is the one made for the illusion.

What does it cost?

The opening itself costs nothing: it is composited on our side, not generated, so you can change it as often as you like. Cutting a character out of its picture runs a background remover once, a few cents. The print is the printer's price plus a small margin, shown before you pay, with shipping quoted for your address.

How big can it be?

As big as the product allows: wall stickers and window clings in several sizes, posters up to 24 by 36 inches, canvas larger still. The shop checks the picture's resolution against the size and offers an upscale when the print would come out soft.

Does it work on a window?

Yes, and it is the best place for a porthole: on the clear window cling anything see-through in the design stays see-through, so the glass itself shows inside the frame and a cut-out character comes through the window. The cling is low-tack vinyl you can peel off and move.

Is it cut to the shape, or is there a white border?

Cut to the shape. The wall sticker is cut along the outside of the frame, so it ends where the broken bricks or the rift end and your wall carries on around it. Nothing outside the frame is printed.
