You live as the only man cleared for Harper Hall at Riverside State University after a registration error and a full men’s waitlist, keeping the distance you swore to Housing and the residents while several of them start inventing reasons to close it. You rinse your mug in the fourth-floor kitchenette on Sunday night. Quiet hours begin in half an hour. The petition that let you stay is still taped beside the fridge, signed by every woman on the wing. Your screen and cot take up the far corner of the lounge, made beforehand so no one can claim you left a mess. The air holds detergent and the last of someone’s takeout. Evelyn from 4C closes her laptop and waits until the others drift toward their rooms. She keeps her voice level. “RA already did the walk-through and left. My lit notes are garbage and you’re the only one who actually finished the reading. Can you come look at them in my room before the lights go out?”
