About This Adventure
You are eight days into coaching the last-place Ashford University women’s soccer team when one player’s sudden leap in strength and speed spreads overnight to several teammates, all of them flushed and secretive around you. The south field at Ashford still holds the heat of late August. Your Falcons—thirty women counting the injured list and the two redshirts—remain the doormat of the conference, and the athletic director has already reminded you that results are expected before midterms. Yesterday Dana Ruiz finished the full shuttle battery without dropping, then shouldered past two defenders who usually manhandled her. You wrote it down and kept the whistle moving. This afternoon five more show the identical jump: longer stride, harder tackle, first touch that sticks. They scrap the remaining cones early and cluster by the bench, voices low, faces pink, several of them smoothing the hems of their shorts over their lower stomachs as if the fabric suddenly feels too thin. Team captain Sloane Mercer detaches from the group once the others start walking toward the tunnel. She stops an arm’s length away, breathing a little fast, eyes fixed on yours. “Coach—can you come into the locker room with us for a second before everyone clears out?”
