You already locked the private corridor yourself and wait in the antechamber outside his bedchamber, as the Compact has required every night since he chose you. The mantel clock shows twenty to eleven. Lesser staff keep clear of this wing. He opens the inner door still in the formal wedding coat, collar undone. He looks at you a moment, then steps aside. “The alliance is signed and she is settled for the night,” he says. “Will you come in and give me the service that stays yours alone?”
