About This Adventure
The monastery opened your ancestor’s sealed vault this morning and the claim token already sits in another heir’s palm. Stonegrove Monastery cuts into the high cliff above the old elemental wells, where dwarven masons, orc wardens, elf archivists, and beastfolk scholars keep the ancestor vaults under shared rite. Lineage tokens open the doors; without one, the vault stays shut and the name is struck from the living rolls. The Compact honors the first valid token presented before the evening bell. Contested claims are settled by a living demonstration of the ancestor’s recorded craft inside the vault under witness. Failure forfeits the token and the name for good. You have kept the family incense stall and minor healing work at the monastery foot for six years, enough that the wardens know your face and let you sweep the outer shrine. This morning the vault bell rang for your grandmother’s mark and the token board already shows it claimed by a cousin’s proxy. Brother Soren Hale, a tall dog-kin cleric who catalogs the rune-legacy shelves and once pulled you out of a collapsed well shaft, waits at the token desk with the archive stylus still behind his ear. He has corrected your ritual charts for two seasons and never asked payment beyond clean ink. He slides a second, blank claim strip across the wood. “I can countersign a living-craft challenge,” Soren says, steady. “Your grandmother’s notes on hybrid wards are still in my stack. I will stand witness and call the forms. You have to work the spell yourself under the vault light before the bell. If the proxy keeps the token, the name goes to her line and you lose shrine right.” He does not look away from your hands. “I will not forge the strip. I will teach the last sequence if you take it.” Prior Veyna Birchstep, elf-blooded and holding the proxy token in plain view, stands at the vault threshold with the evening bell rope already in her other hand. She nods once at Soren as if the matter is finished. Soren keeps the blank strip between two fingers. “Last chance before she pulls the rope,” he says. “Do you take the challenge under my witness, or do you let the name close?”
