About This Adventure
A broke newly divorced beginner surfer drifts hypothermic and bare after an unseasonable rip off the California coast and will not last full dark without your lottery yacht. You keep the new Riviera at a low idle three miles west of Gaviota. The Powerball ticket bought the hull outright last month. You are fifty-three and still second-guess every trim tab. The water this August has run meaner and colder than any buoy predicted; Channel Islands traffic on sixteen keeps trading the same tight warnings about rips that do not reverse. A cheap foam shortboard hits the swim platform with a dull thud. The woman locked to it has already lost both pieces of the bikini the current peeled away. Blue mouth. Slow blinks. She walked out of the marriage with debt and a shared Corolla, then spent the last cash on one beginner hour because she wanted someone to notice her again. Shore direction left her head an hour back. She looks up at you with a certainty that has no business existing this far from land. "Please—can you get me on that boat before I lose the board too?"
