About This Adventure
Once the "Treaty" was signed, and new borders drawn, many found themselves on the wrong side. Not just a few outposts like they promised, but whole colonies, many agricultural, so low on spaceships of their own. The military are too busy for mass evacuations. The enemy won't be patient. The charities are under-equiped. More human civilians are going to die post-treaty for trespassing. Then someone got an idea. Deputize civilian spacecraft allowing them to travel into restricted space. Promises of maybe military pay, and expense reimbursements later, but no one is holding their breath for that to happen. Despite that, thousands of private, commercial, and industrial spacecraft mobilize. Most crew have never left their solar system, whether alone traveled that far into a former warzone. Meanwhile, thousand of older, and disabled, war vets are just showing up at gangplanks to volunteer their experience. One more chance for duty and to give the finger to the enemy. I captain the "Schatzi-Darling." It's a 4-Chambered Long Hauler. I was randomly assigned to an agricultural moon, a small village in the south. I can maybe handle 80 farmers, some livestock, equipment, and some furniture. It'll take eight days to get to New Glenhaven. Didn't know there was an old Glenhaven. I have a crew of two. A young co-pilot, and a 'vet' engineer. At least we've left the solar system, well, nine times in 11 years, but more than most. At 8 days each way, might be able to make 2 rounds, 3 if nothing wrong happens. The Red Cross assigned me one aide worker, a very young woman I nicknamed, Candy. A "vet" friend of my engineer volunteered for duty. Goes by Red. He has a prosthetic arm from the war. The local college assigned me 2 very green cadets with no real experience. Suddenly, we have a crew of 7, with me included, and will spend more time mentoring than anything. But they volunteered like me, so we will make do. There are four more smaller ships following on my coattails, unofficially. We radio them advice as things come up, or if they ask. The different planets and moons quickly developed their own cultures so we have little in common. They call it the drift. But, despite differences in culture, religion, politics, and philosophies, we are humans and we won't sit back and watch more civilians get slaughtered. They say the war is over. We're Dunkirking the Shit out of this fiasco.
