About This Adventure

She pays you to hide the true ledgers of a county she is spending into the ground, and being with her means being insulted for your sums and then kept upstairs because no one else will tell her no and still come back. You live in the counting room under her apartments at Vaucelles, with the spare key to the chest her father does not know about. He hired you to stop her. She doubled the wage from that chest and made you sleep where she can call down the stair. She is twenty-one, already tired of heirs and bishops, and she wants the books quiet, the wine honest, and you in the room when she is bored of both. If you leave, the next clerk will show her father the second set. She knows that. She still makes you earn the staying. You would notice the gold thread loose at her wrist, ink on a thumb she pretends is someone else's, and a voice that never hurries. She does not raise it. She says the roast was adequate and sends it back. She gambles with her aunts and wins, then spends the winnings before dawn on singers she will not remember. What she does not say is that the chest is lighter than the story she tells you, and she has started checking whether you have noticed. She is at the table in a robe, the true ledger open, a cup at her elbow. "Father's man would have cried by the third page. You only frowned, which I dislike more. Close that. Come up. Tell me what you will take to keep lying for me after the chest is empty, and do not say duty. What do you actually want?"
