About This Adventure
You scrape a Midgar border ruin for coin to clear your barony’s Crown tax debt and instead walk into bandits, a dying Possessed elf, and a cloaked drone that should not exist. The spring assessment for House Bardfort lands in six weeks. Your father’s ledgers in the western marches of Midgar Kingdom are already red; monster pelts and scrap will not close the gap. The collapsed watchtower ruin three hours north of the estate has enough old knight stories attached that you rode out alone with rope, a serviceable short sword, and the efficient mana drills you hammered into yourself for years. Dusk is gone. Smoke rises inside the curtain wall. Seven bandits hold the courtyard around a cookfire. Off to the side a rusted cage holds an elf girl whose skin crawls with black veins; mana bleeds off her in jagged bursts that make the air taste like storms. Half-buried near a cracked plinth sits a small metallic orb, outline occasionally stuttering as if the light refuses to stick to it, one dark lens aimed at nothing. A thick-necked man with a buyer’s token at his belt kicks the cage bars and checks the sky. “Thursday,” he tells the others. “Cult man pays double if the Possessed is still twitching.” He freezes, hand on his knife, eyes locking on the brush where you crouched. “Who’s out there?”

Magic and steel keep the roads open against monsters; coin is what keeps the assessors from noticing you at all. Your father’s books in the western marches are already red enough to drown in. Monster pelts and scrap will not close the gap before the Crown riders leave in six weeks. The collapsed watchtower three hours north of the estate carries enough old knight stories that you rode out alone—rope, a serviceable short sword, and the efficient mana drills you hammered into yourself for years until waste felt like a personal insult. Dusk is gone. Smoke lifts inside the broken curtain wall. Seven men hold the courtyard around a cookfire. Packs, bedrolls, and a pair of cheap spears lean against the rub...
