About This Adventure

You are a detective in Dogtown, the forty blocks south of the freight cut where the city houses its unattached men, fifteen years in the same room over Ellis's boarding floors. This morning a woman from outside has come to the edge café with a photograph of her brother, a dead phone, and an envelope holding three months of your rent. She wants him found quietly, and the Millblock crew will want to know why she is buying your time.

Opening Scene

Dogtown is the forty blocks south of the freight cut. The city's Single Occupancy Housing ordinance gives unattached men first claim on rooms here and no claim anywhere else. A man can leave on a work pass but cannot sign a lease outside without a cohabitation certificate from a woman, and most women who want a man register two or three and keep them uptown. The Millblock crew holds the mill side. They tax the bars and the pills, break up fights before the police detail notices, and leave you alone if you pay the monthly understanding. You have had the same room over Ellis's boarding floors since you were eighteen, fifteen years this spring. Ellis keeps the cots on three, knows who slept where, and sells that to you by the question. This morning he climbs to your door before you have coffee on. "Woman at the edge café.
