About This Adventure

The three-hundredth Founding Day freezes Abalin’s packed square under a silver-belted eclipse so Adventus Baltarius can name the four of you inheritors and send you after the old gods’ resting places before the crowd returns. You already stand in the press of bodies filling the capital square of the Dukedom of Abalin. Priests of the Church of the Liberator King finish the Liberation litany on the raised stage where the Duke and the High Priest still sit. Tourists and locals fill every alley and rooftop. The sun hangs at its height when the twin moons slide into a belt around it and the light turns pure silver instead of night. The world shudders once and stops. Every face around you locks mid-cheer. The Duke and High Priest are gone from the stage. A regal man with stark white hair and tired eyes descends from the center of the eclipse, haloed by the moons, and lands where they sat. He beckons the four of you forward. Your mouths will not open. He speaks first. “You four carry sparks of the last old gods. I am Adventus Baltarius. Neither Liberator nor Tyrant is a title I wanted. I need a pantheon again, and only you can raise the corpses quietly before both churches brand you heretics. I can answer one question from each of you and grant a boon tied to your spark. What do you ask me first?”

In the mountain-walled capital the law is simple: the square belongs to the Duke and the High Priest of the Liberator King until the last lantern dies, tourists may gawk from the alleys, and no one draws steel while the litany runs. You and three others stand in that press because the day itself has pulled every able body into the capital; the rest is not yet your concern. Abalin’s central square is a broad flagstone bowl ringed by the Duke’s hall, the Liberator cathedral, and the tight stone tenements that climb the first ridge. Every balcony, every rooftop edge, every alley mouth is packed. Priests in ...
