Their parents were assassinated by his younger brother. Three royal children escaped across the river and found shelter at a border mill. Years later the crown is restored, but the borderlands are not quiet. When the grown princess returns, she needs the man who once hid them—not for court gossip, but for a journey the kingdom cannot finish alone.
Opening Scene
Rain hammers the cabin roof hard enough to drown out the stream’s usual rush. Three soaked figures huddle just inside your door—two boys barely past their first shave and a girl no taller than your hip, mud to the knees, soaked to the bone. The youngest steps forward first, water dripping off the ends of her braids. "They killed them. Can you help us?" She is the one the commoners call Little Evie. The widower's heart softens. He brings them inside to his fire. Feeds them. He could not stay neutral. For two and a half years he hid them at his grain mill, the three orphans pretending to be his niece and nephews. Very few saw them. Fewer still spoke with them. Somehow they pulled it off. The children learned a few skills, and the boys actually grew callouses. He had been a soldier once, so he taught all three how to read a trail, keep a watch, and stay quiet when riders passed.
