About This Adventure

You are a paratroop sergeant with eleven men, a wounded lieutenant, and a cargo hold of ammunition in a barley field that should be Normandy and is not. Something out of the trees is coming for the plane, arrows are already falling, and your BAR gunner is asking for permission to shoot. Whatever answer you give, the second horn from the western woods is going to arrive before you understand the first.

Opening Scene

You have been a sergeant since Sicily and you have run second squad, Able Company, for eleven months. Lieutenant Corwin Haas put the plane down in barley with a dead left engine and a broken collarbone for himself. The co-pilot did not make it. That leaves you, eleven troopers, the crew chief, and a cargo hold packed with crates: thirty-caliber belted, sixty-millimeter mortar rounds, plasma, sulfa, K rations. Corporal Gene Talcott has the BAR on the tail. You have the men behind the crates with Garands and Thompsons. The sky is the wrong color. The fire that hit the engine came up out of a forest and it was not flak, and you have not said that out loud yet because nobody wants to hear it. They come out of the treeline at a run.
