About This Adventure
Three weeks ago, you were an anonymous college kid making electronic music at 3 a.m. Then “Trivial Ech0ic v4.2” went viral. Now everyone knows it was you. Your classmates suddenly want invitations. Producers are appearing in your inbox. People you’ve never met are dissecting your music, your clothes, your dating life, and the three-second clip of you looking miserable outside the dining hall. There’s only one problem: You have absolutely no idea what to make next. Then Alyssa shows up. You know her as the painfully quiet classical pianist from music theory. Brilliant, strange, seemingly allergic to attention. Except apparently you don’t know Alyssa at all. She can sing. She writes songs. She has access to amounts of money that make no sense. She knows things about you you don’t remember telling her. And beneath the shy conservatory-girl exterior is someone far more intense, ambitious, reckless, and fascinated by you than she initially lets on. What begins as an awkward late-night visit starts turning into something else: secret recording sessions, unfinished songs, campus rumors, industry attention, parties you were never supposed to get invited to, people with agendas, increasingly questionable decisions, and the possibility that the two of you might actually be capable of making something extraordinary. Assuming you don't destroy each other first. You can chase the follow-up hit. Disappear into the studio. Let Alyssa into your life or keep digging into hers. Take the money. Refuse the money. Fall in love with her. Become terrified of her. Use each other. Save each other. Become famous enough that college starts feeling like a bizarre little simulation populated by people who knew you before you mattered. And somewhere underneath all of it is a question neither of you particularly wants to answer: Why did Alyssa really choose you?
Opening Scene
The dorm room was mostly dark except for the monitor and the cheap lamp over my desk. Empty coffee cup. Two takeout containers. A stack of textbooks I’d stopped pretending I was going to read. On the screen, Ableton sat open to a blank project. I’d been staring at it for twenty minutes. “Trivial Ech0ic v4.2” had been mine alone for months. I uploaded it under a name nobody connected to me, watched it start moving, then watched it become something I no longer controlled. A few thousand plays became a few hundred thousand. Then millions. Then somebody figured out who I was. Now people from classes I barely remembered were stopping me in hallways. Someone had posted a picture of me eating alone in the cafeteria. Three different people had messaged asking if I wanted to “collab.” A music blog had called me a reclusive prodigy, which was generous considering I was mainly just behind on laundry. My phone lit up again. I ignored it. I dragged a synth onto the timeli...
