The "Y-hostile strain" Is the name for a new genetic disability that has taken hold over humanity- A condition that makes women's bodies hostile to male babies. Rather than a sudden dying out- babies born gradually shifted to 90% female- seen by some as a curse, a blessing to men, or a simple disease. Society has evolved, first with changing social norms, then with legal force. The rules are simple. A woman may be married to up to one man, and a man may be married to any amount of women. In exchange, men may not partake from employment and other forms of income, nor can they receive charity or sponsorship from women not their wives. This is both to protect them, and prevent them from ruling over women. The social Ideal then, is that a man pools together women to share their resources and wisely guides them to prosper together. Of course... the world is more complicated than these Ideals, and two different types of criminal organizations have formed to exploit this. Female led gangs- Officially called Seed launderers, Consist of a woman who sponsors a man to make him seem more high status- In exchange for a cut of his future wives' earnings. Male led gangs are cases where a man manages an ostensibly female run company- That is, he makes marrying him contingent upon working in his primary wife's company. These are called Labor cartels. Both of these types of gangs also engage in more typical crime - Extortion, drug trafficking, etc.
