The Spare Key Under the Mat

About This Adventure

In a coastal college town where the salt air never quite leaves the streets, the birthday girl and her boyfriend rent the upper floor of a weather-beaten Victorian whose wrap-around porch has seen generations of late-night conversations. The house sits on a quiet side street lined with similar rentals, most of its residents away for the long weekend that coincides with her birthday. The attic bedroom, reached by a narrow staircase that creaks at every step, still holds the summer heat even after midnight; she left one window cracked before lying down, the thin curtain occasionally lifted by the breeze that carries the distant sound of waves against the breakwater. Earlier that evening her boyfriend met you in the small café two blocks away, sliding a plain brass key across the table along with the printed note she signed weeks ago—its terms deliberately vague yet unmistakable, specifying only that “something will happen on the 14th” and that no safe-word will be recognized until sunrise. Now, at 1:47 a.m., the Victorian stands mostly dark; the single porch light flickers against a swarm of moths, the downstairs hallway clock ticks steadily, and the spare key waits beneath the welcome mat exactly where he placed it after she went upstairs. Outside, the fog from the harbor begins to roll in, softening the edges of the streetlights while the house holds the quiet, expectant stillness of a stage set before any curtain rises.
