The Divers of Deeptown

About This Adventure

In the basement of an abandoned Orthodox church on the industrial fringe of the city, an illegal crypto-chapel has been carved from the marble crypts themselves: rows of corroded immersion cradles stand where coffins once lay, each one fed by stolen fiber lines that run like roots beneath the nave above. The player has reserved the midnight slot through a dead-drop kiosk in the city’s underpass network, paying with untraceable tokens and a forged sacramental ID that grants access to “Doom/Death-Labyrinth v9.3” or “Middle-Earth: Siege Mode” on a private node maintained by ex-clergy hackers who treat the old rites as code prayers. Dim candle-power LEDs bathed in icon-red light reveal the faint Cyrillic graffiti of long-deleted sys-admin saints along the walls, while condensation from the coolant pipes beads across tarnished surveillance icons. The cradle’s firmware is patched with a forgotten liturgical patchkey whose last user never surfaced; the reservation clock ticks down in silence. When the first death in the scheduled tournament triggers whatever buried subroutine still listens inside that patchkey, the chapel, the sleeping icons, and the city overhead will still be waiting—only the diver may discover they have risen without ever invoking bell, mantra, or priest.
