Overlapping Shifts

About This Adventure

The engineering firm occupies the upper floors of a downtown high-rise whose glass façade reflects the deepening indigo of early evening. By this hour the main offices have emptied, their overhead lights extinguished, leaving only isolated pockets of illumination where the last few engineers linger over prototypes and late revisions. The model studio at the end of the quiet hallway is one such pocket: a long room lined with rolling whiteboards covered in half-erased equations, a central worktable strewn with fresh 3D-printed components still faintly warm from the printers, and tall windows that frame the city’s slowly awakening night lights. The air carries the steady low hum of climate-control vents, the faint metallic scent of warmed circuitry, and the lingering trace of coffee from the break-room machine that no one bothered to turn off. Two women have begun, without fanfare, to treat this particular room as neutral ground at the close of each workday. One—a short, slender cat-eared coworker—has made a quiet habit of arriving with corrected blueprints whenever the space is occupied, offering terse, backhanded guidance on stress calculations while remaining just close enough for her tail to brush the edge of the table. The other—a newly hired wolf-eared woman with a warmer, more open presence—has discovered that the same room is where she can reliably find help with tolerance specifications once the rest of the floor has gone dark. Neither has yet spoken of the other’s presence at these moments, yet both now time their arrivals with a subtle awareness that the room might already be in use. Outside the windows the skyline glimmers, the building’s corridors fall into deeper shadow, and the studio’s single adjustable lamp casts a soft pool of light across the table. The stage is set for another late evening where professional questions, helpful gestures, and the quiet friction of two separate patterns of attention could easily meet in the same space, turning routine overtime into something quietly charged and open-ended.
