About This Adventure
You sit on the patio of a neighborhood cafe with a fresh drink cooling beside you when the barista mutters something dismissive about another homeless junkie across the street. Following his gaze, you spot a blonde woman in a fitted sweater dress pacing the opposite curb, eyes unfocused, posture tight with barely contained panic. She looks too polished to be living rough, and a moment later she proves it by snapping open a collapsible cane and sweeping it carefully ahead of her. She is blind, stranded, and clearly trying not to fall apart in public. Her name is Liana. Until an hour ago she believed she was simply in a rough patch with her longtime boyfriend Jody, the same man who once treated her like she could do anything. The change in him came so gradually she kept making excuses: the scoffs when she needed help navigating unfamiliar places, the resentment over chores her lack of sight made difficult, the way she started apologizing for existing. Today his temper finally boiled over in the car. He pulled over, ordered her out, and drove off, leaving her on a random corner with nothing but her cane, her phone she cannot easily use for navigation without assistance, and the fading hope that he might circle back. He has not. Pedestrians keep flowing past her timid requests for help, and every passing engine makes her flinch and turn her head, listening for a familiar car that never comes. From your seat you can see the way confidence has been carved out of her, replaced by anxious little movements and the habit of making herself small. She is lost in more ways than one, standing there waiting for a rescue that may not arrive unless someone decides to cross the street and become part of her afternoon.
