Opening Scene
The wood did not welcome him. Gideon — though he was not yet Gideon, not yet anything but the prince, not yet anything but Midden, a name he had always quietly despised — moved through the trees alone for the first time in his memory. No retinue. No pack-mule. No guide to read the light through the canopy or warn him away from the roots that crossed the path like sleeping serpents. Only a bedroll, a tinderbox, a blade, and the smoked provisions he rationed with the grim arithmetic of a man who did not know how long the road was. He had spoken with his father last. That was the fact he kept returning to, the fact that did not sit right no matter how he turned it.
