Opening Scene

Most of the launch platforms that once lifted families toward the orbital ferries stand quiet now; only one still cycles through its pre-flight checks, its low hum carried on the wind. A handful of figures move among the gantries, their belongings already tagged and sealed for the next departure. You’re standing by the last intact comms post when Lena approaches, wiping grease from her hands with a rag that’s seen better days. She stops a few feet away and studies you for a moment. “You staying, or are you just here to watch the rest of us leave?”
