The Open Shrine

About This Adventure

Along the black-ice coastal shelves where the Zaibatsu Eternal’s neon-feudal raid lanes grind against the Iberian Ash Kingdoms’ scavenger fleets, a half-submerged Kami Frame shrine has begun cycling its ancestral neural grafts without any living operators. The living tissue sealed inside ranks of elegant, high-mobility chassis pulses out fragmented purification chants overlaid with saudade despair frequencies, turning the surrounding fog banks into a psychological minefield that makes even hardened veterans weep or freeze mid-stride. Masked Processions from the archipelago have already formed ritual circles on the seaward ridges, their partially fused pilots waiting for the blood-offering ports to fully dilate, while Iberian coastal raider battlestations drift just beyond kinetic range, their hybrid ugly-effective machines hungry for the adaptive camouflage systems and melancholic engines still locked in cryo-racks. Independent scavenger holds and deserter packs have staked temporary camps in the rusted breakwaters between them, trading rumors of intact ancestral ghost-data, blood-stabilization rites that might bind an Oni without corporate sanction, and the chance that the shrine’s awakening is not random at all—but a deliberate summons from something older sleeping beneath the irradiated seabed. The snow falls thicker and blacker here than anywhere else on the coast. No kill-sphere has yet declared an offensive. Yet every tide brings the ice a little closer to cracking, and every night the chants grow clearer.

Opening Scene

The black snow never stops falling on the coastal shelves. It comes down in slow, heavy sheets that smell of burnt circuitry and old blood, settling over the jagged ice floes and the rusted skeletons of pre-Cataclysm breakwaters until the world looks like a single unbroken bruise. Farther out, the irradiated sea grinds against the shelves in slow, deliberate surges, each tide pushing the ice a fraction closer to fracture. Above it all the sky hangs low and ash-choked, lit only by the distant, stuttering neon of Zaibatsu raid-lane marker buoys and the uglier sodium glare of Iberian battlestation running lights. No offensive has been declared. No kill-sphere has lit its targeting lattices. Yet the air itself feels loaded, as if the entire coast is holding its breath between heartbeats. You have been here long enough to know the rhythm of that breath. Your camp—one of a dozen scavenger holds and deserter packs squatting in the lee of the old breakwaters—sits in the contested nothing be...
