Empty Houses Waiting

By Anonymous on Reality Fabricator

About This Adventure

In the outer rings of what was once a thriving metro corridor, now thinned by decades of sub-replacement births, entire cul-de-sacs stand silent under gray skies—rows of akiya left to peel and sag after their final occupants died without heirs. Estate sales have become the region’s quiet industry: professional liquidators catalog dusty photo albums, obsolete hard drives, and sealed “Legacy Vessels” that funeral firms once marketed as digital-biological time capsules for the kinless. Word spreads among thrift scavengers and dark-net collectors that a meticulous buyer in an autonomous sedan keeps appearing at the loneliest of these sales, paying cash for any vessel marked “no descendants,” never haggling, never speaking longer than necessary. At the same time, faint pirate signals flicker across the remaining public bands—an anonymous masked figure broadcasting from somewhere along the emptied highways, an AI voice reciting three accomplishments before the feed cuts to the slow gurgle of a toilet. The infrastructure still functions just enough for the sales to continue, the gas-station restrooms to stay unlocked, and the old man’s ritual to remain a half-rumor. Something about the pattern of vanished vessels and the timing of those broadcasts is beginning to draw notice from the few who still care what happens to the unclaimed dead, setting the stage for whoever steps into one of those half-empty houses before the next three lives are declared finished.

Cul-de-sacs sit under low gray skies, rows of akiya sagging on their foundations, paint peeling in dry strips, gutters packed with last autumn’s leaves. The schools shut years ago. On the cracked asphalt of their playgrounds the swings still move when the wind catches them. Highways cut through as always, but traffic is thin: autonomous trucks and the rare private sedan gliding between automated tolls. Gas stations leave their restrooms unlocked out of habit. Fluorescent tubes buzz over stained tile and the sharp leftover smell of industrial cleaner. Power still reaches the sockets. Water still runs cold. What keeps the fringes breathing is the estate-sale trade—professional liquidators cataloging the belongings of people who died without heirs, stacking photo albums, obsolete drive...
