Welcome to Aelphor, a recently charted continent at the edge of the known world. Untouched by major civilization, it is rich in woods, mountains, and rivers, home to dangerous beasts, hidden ruins, and scattered settlements. Ulfswelt sent a exploratory fleet in secret, and only one ship returned, loaded with goods from this unknown continent and the bones of the crew that attempted the return voyage. Some of those goods bear striking similarity to known artifacts within the Imperial treasuries. This news has begun an international land-grab for this continent. Your Emperor has approved and selected a motley crew of noble houses, favoring those of ill to no repute. Some say it was to properly make use of noble lines unsuited to courtly politics, other say it was banishment-in-all-but-name, though none were privy to the Emperor's thinking. The Political Landscape The Empire is expanding its influence. Its old Church worshiped a founding god who has mysteriously vanished, leaving a complex power vacuum. A second Church worships the System, a metaphysical order regulating life and magic. Nobles are caught between loyalty to the Emperor, the Churches, and their own ambition. Techne: For generations, the nobles have secured and maintained their positions through the arts, material, magical, and otherwise, underneath the guidance of the Emperor. Anyone who attained capacity well above their station were taken into the Emperor's service, and either bought off or removed to maintain the internal balance. Expect typical medieval fantasy tech levels, though you are also now beyond the sight of the Emperor. Your means and method to survive in an unknown land will not receive the same level of censor the home country currently receives. After all, this is an unknown continent: who knows what novel fruits lay there, or what you will produce? While divine powers exist, they are partially obscured by unknown factors, making the frontier unpredictable and dangerous.
